Carlos Ghosn is chairman and chief executive officer of Renault S.A. and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., two global automotive companies. With a combined work force of 350,000 employees, the two companies generated a combined revenue of 135 billion dollars in 2008. The Renault-Nissan Alliance ranks third among all global automakers with global sales of 6.8 million units in 2008. After 10 years of results and value creation, the Alliance continues to be on the premise of trust and the pursuit of strategies aimed at profitable growth.
Mr. Ghosn was appointed chief executive officer of Renault S.A. in May 2005 and its chairman since May 2009.
Mr. Ghosn joined Nissan as its chief operating officer in June 1999, following the establishment of the Renault-Nissan Alliance in March 1999. He was appointed chief executive officer in June 2001. Under his leadership, Nissan successfully delivered a revival plan, returning the company to significant growth and profitability.
Before he joined Nissan, Mr. Ghosn had served as executive vice president of the Renault Group, a position he had held since December 1996. From 1981 to 1996, he worked with Michelin.
Mr. Ghosn is a member of the board of Alcoa. He is also a member of: the World Economic Forum Foundation Board, the International Advisory Board of Itau-Unibanco, the European Round Table of Industrialists and the Electrification Coalition (Washington D.C. based).
Among many accolades, Mr. Ghosn was listed first among the 2001 “25 Most Influential Global Business Executives” by Time and CNN, was ranked among the “World’s Most Respected Leaders” by Financial Times magazine in 2003 and 2004, received a 2005 International Academy of Management Award, was named the CNBC European “Business Leader of the Year 2006” and was inducted into the Japan and U.S. Automotive Hall of Fame. He received the INSEAD 2008 Transcultural Leadership Award and the 2009 Benjamin Franklin Award from the French-American Foundation. He was received into the Legion D’Honneur in France, accepted a Medal of Blue Ribbon from the Emperor of Japan, received the Ordem de Rio Branco from Brazil and was named a Knight Commander of the British Empire.
Mr. Ghosn earned engineering degrees from Ecole Polytechnique, France, in 1974 and from Ecole des Mines de Paris in 1978.
Born in Brazil in 1954, Mr. Ghosn is married and has four children.
